It makes humans ill and creatures get fired up; creatures also smell it as a specific sort of floral scent (which varies on who is using it). Basically it's a battle aura which makes humans queasy and which identifies to mononoke a) what type of creature is in battle and, if people know that person in question, b) who specifically is in battle. As a water mononoke, Tsukihiko's is identifiable as Varuna (water) Miasma.
